Crowns and conventional bridges or dentures may not be your only options when replacing missing teeth. Dental implants offer a smile that looks and feels very natural. Surgically placed below the gums, implants fuse to the jawbone and serve as a base for individual replacement teeth, bridges or a denture
Dental implants provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. Made from titanium posts, they provide a safe and effective way to improve your smile and your ability to eat the foods you love. Because they fuse directly with the bone, implants will also help to preserve facial structure, preventing bone deterioration, which can occur when teeth are missing. Learn more
When a tooth is lost or extracted, the remaining jaw bone becomes susceptible to bone deterioration if the problem is not addressed with a bone graft. This procedure promotes healing in the jawbone and eliminates the problems that can occur when a tooth is lost. A bone graft will provide structural stability and linkage, as well as stimulate osteogensis, or healing in the bone.
Taking care of the jaw bone when a tooth is removed or lost is an important step that is often overlooked. Learn more
Complete Dentures are prosthetic devices used to replace a patient's natural teeth. Dentures allow a patient to regain their smile, and eat foods more easily.
Additionally, dentures provide natural support to facial muscles, which would otherwise sag and cause the appearance of premature aging.
There are two basic types of dentures. A conventional full denture is made and placed in the patient & apos;s mouth after the remaining teeth are removed and tissues have healed which may take several months. By contrast, an immediate complete denture is inserted as soon as the remaining teeth are removed. The dentist takes measurements and makes models of the patient & apos;s jaws during a preliminary visit. With immediate dentures, the denture wearer does not have to be without teeth during the healing period.
Most dentures are made of acrylic. The teeth are made of plastic, porcelain, or a combination of the two. Over time, dentures will wear and need to be replaced or relined in order to keep the jaw alignment normal. The alignment will slowly change as the bone and gum ridges recede or shrink due to the extraction of the teeth. Regular dentist examinations are important for the denture wearer so that the oral tissues can be checked for changes or disease. Learn more
Teeth whitening in Fort Lauderdale is a highly effective way to brighten your smile quickly and safely. This procedure will correct brown, yellow, and spotted tooth staining. It provides a lasting effect, and works on people of all ages.
The procedure begins as Dr. Polasky creates a custom stent which will hold the bleaching agent against your teeth at night. Within 1 to 2 weeks you will notice a dramatic difference. Your mouth guard will be ready in 1 to 2 days for you to pick up and begin using. While severe cases may require the use of a veneer or a crown, bleaching will restore most yellow, spotted, or brown teeth to a brilliant white. Learn more
If a patient is missing one or more teeth, chewing and speaking can become a problem. Bridges can be the solution. They help to maintain the shape of a patient's face, as well as reducing stress on surrounding teeth while biting.
Bridges can be provided in one of two ways. The first is a natural tooth bridge, in which the bridge is supported by a patient's natural teeth adjacent to the void (abutment teeth). These bridges can either be permanent, or removable.
The second type is an implant retained bridge. It is used when the patient has more than one natural tooth missing. In this type of bridge, Dr.Polasky first creates a dental implant to support the bridge. The implants are extremely secure, as they attach the artificial teeth directly to the jaw. As an implant specialist, Dr. Polasky is able to provide his patients with several options based upon their specific needs. Learn more
Crowns are used to cover and support a tooth with a large filling when there isn't enough tooth left. They can also be used to attach a bridge, protect a weak tooth from breaking or restore one that's already broken. Crowns can be made or surfaced with various materials, resulting in a finish that matches a patient's natural teeth. Crowns are long lasting, often for 20-30 years.
Crowns can be used whenever extreme damage to a tooth has occurred. They are often used to replace missing teeth, offer support to misshapen teeth, fix smile and chewing problems, and to strengthen teeth with root canal fillings. Best of all, they look completely natural. Learn more
In some cases, a dental problem may require the use of an extraction. Dr. Polasky will consult with a patient to determine when this is necessary, and when it is, he will advise on possible ways to deal with a missing tooth, often by replacement. Dr. Polasky will also provide extraction patients with post-care advice to ensure fast recovery and minimal discomfort. Learn more
Dr. Polasky is capable of providing several alternatives to the patient with complex dental needs, including implant prosthetics.
There are two basic types of prosthetics:
Fixed
Fixed prosthetics are not removable by the patient, and therefore must be designed such that the patient is able to clean and maintain it with regular brushing and flossing.
Removable
Removable prosthetics must be removed in order for the patient to clean them.
Regardless of which type used, Dr. Polasky will design each device to minimize visual impact to the patient, and to match the patient's mouth and face. Both types are tailor made to each patient to maximize function and aesthetic appeal. Learn more
After an extraction, it's important for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding and begin the healing process. That's why we ask you to bite on a gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes following the extraction. If the bleeding continues after you remove the gauze pad, place another gauze pad and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. You may have to do this several times. You may also use a moist tea bag instead of gauze
After the blood clot forms it is important to protect it, especially for the next 24 hours. Do NOT smoke, drink through a straw, rinse your mouth vigorously, or clean the teeth next to the extraction site.
These activities will dislodge the clot and slow down the healing process. Limit yourself to calm activities for the first 24 hours, this keeps you blood pressure lower, reduces bleeding and helps the healing process.
After the tooth is extracted you may feel some pain and have some swelling. You can use an ice pack if necessary, to keep this to a minimum. The swelling usually starts to go down after 48 hours.
Use pain medication only as directed, call the office if it doesn't seem to be working. If antibiotics are prescribed, continue to take them for the indicated length of time, even if all symptoms and signs of infection are gone. Drink lots of fluids and eat only soft nutritious foods on the day of the extraction. Don't use alcoholic beverages and avoid hot and spicy foods. You can begin eating normally the next day or as soon as it is comfortable.
Gently rinse your mouth with salt water 3 times a day beginning the day after the extraction (1 tsp. salt in 1 cup of warm water, rinse-swish-spit out). Also, rinse gently after meals, it helps keep food out of the extraction site. It is very important to resume your normal dental routine after 24 hours: this should include brushing your teeth and tongue and flossing at least once a day. This speeds the healing and helps keep your breath and mouth fresh.
Call our office immediately 954-229-2424 if you have any heavy bleeding, severe pain, continued swelling after 2 or 3 days, or a reaction to the medication. After a few days you will be feeling fine and can resume your normal activities. Learn more

Introduction
If you have been told you have periodontal (gum) disease, you're not alone. An estimated 80 percent of American adults currently have some form of the disease.
Periodontal diseases range from simple gum inflammation to serious disease that results in major damage to the soft tissue and bone that support the teeth. In the worst cases, teeth are lost.
Gum disease is a threat to your oral health. Research is also pointing to possible health effects of periodontal diseases that go well beyond your mouth (more about this later). Whether it is stopped, slowed, or gets worse depends a great deal on how well you care for your teeth and gums every day, from this point forward. Learn more
periodontal disease
Our mouths are full of bacteria. These bacteria, along with mucus and other particles, constantly form a sticky, colorless "plaque" on teeth. Brushing and flossing help get rid of plaque. Plaque that is not removed can harden and form bacteria-harboring "tartar" that brushing doesn't clean. Only a professional cleaning by a dentist or dental hygienist can remove tartar. Learn more

Periodontitis
When gingivitis is not treated, it can advance to "periodontitis" (which means "inflammation around the tooth.") In periodontitis, gums pull away from the teeth and form "pockets" that are infected. The body's immune system fights the bacteria as the plaque spreads and grows below the gum line. Bacterial toxins and the body's enzymes fighting the infection actually start to break down the bone and connective tissue that hold teeth in place. If not treated, the bones, gums, and connective tissue that support the teeth are destroyed. The teeth may eventually become loose and have to be removed. Learn more
People usually don't show signs of gum disease until they are in their 30s or 40s. Men are more likely to have periodontal disease than women. Although teenagers rarely develop periodontitis, they can develop gingivitis, the milder form of gum disease. Most commonly, gum disease develops when plaque is allowed to build up along and under the gum line. Learn more
The main goal of treatment is to control the infection. The number and types of treatment will vary, depending on the extent of the gum disease. Any type of treatment requires that the patient keep up good daily care at home. Additionally, modifying certain behaviors, such as quitting tobacco use, might also be suggested as a way to improve treatment outcome. Learn more
INVISALIGN
Your treatment plan begins with a consultation with an experienced Invisalign provider. During that consultation, you and your doctor will discuss the options to treat your particular issue. Once your doctor confirms that your issue can be corrected with the Invisalign system, he or she will write a detailed treatment plan that determines how each of your aligners will change throughout your program. When you begin treatment, you'll wear each set of aligners in approximately two-week increments. The aligners gently move your teeth into position, and at the end of each two-week period, you "graduate" to the next set of custom aligners.
As you progress through the series of aligners, your teeth will begin moving, little by little. And you don't have to wait until you complete treatment to see your smile change—you may start seeing positive changes early in the process. You will have occasional checkups with your doctor—often as little as once every six weeks—in order to gauge your progress. And at the end of your treatment, you'll be showing off a smile you never knew you'd have before you had Invisalign.
Before you schedule your consultation with an Invisalign provider, it's a good idea to take the self-assessment to figure out if the Invisalign system is for you. Then take the results with you to your initial consultation.
